Shotgun Brothers Returning, a photo from Istanbul, Marmara

Photographer's Note

The fishermen of Garipçe cast their nets very close. As we sat at the restaurant, we watched them go up and down casting their nets. I shot this photo when this boat was returning to harbor. You can see the nets’ floats behind it.

The boat's name, loosely translated, is Shotgun Brothers. Actually, its strict translation is Siblings with Double Barrel Gun. It is interesting that Turkish does not have a word for just brother. We have a word kardeş, which literally means sibling. If we are talking about a younger brother, we say ”erkek kardeş“ (male sibling) but older brother gets a special word, ”ağabey“ (shortened to ağbi when spoken). Likewise ”kız kardeş“ (girl sibling) means younger sister but an older sister is an ”abla“. So, why did I instinctively translate Çifteli Kardeşler (Siblings with Double Barrel Gun) as Shotgun Brothers? I suppose I assumed in this traditional fishing village, women would stay home and the men, hence the brothers, would go fishing.

Hello Murat, Fascinating note about Turkish. I think that something similar is in Chinese. There is no word just for sister or brother. It can be only older brother gēgē or younger brother dìdì, older sister jiejie or younger sister mèimei. What with twins? One is older. I have no problem, I have no siblings.
Attractive composition with the guys on the blue boat and other red boat. Nice blackbird.

A fantastic take, Murat, wonderful use of light and stunning blue water of the strait.
Red boat moving in a diff. direction, contra the blue coming boat added nice sense of motion. Guys on the boat seem doing different things nd nobody was holding the helm...
I really enjoy this one.

Hello Murat,
What a colourful and attractive photo. Two brightly painted boats going in opposite directions and the nearest one full of fishermen. I read the note with great interest too. Although I took an evening course of Turkish for two years, decades ago, I actually thought that "kardeş" just means brother. That's why I found the expression "kız kardeş" so strange. What kind of attitude to women was that, when there is no proper word for sister, just "girl brother"?
