Surgeon General Salih Effendi Mansion, a photo from Istanbul, Marmara

Photographer's Note

This is a view of the yalı (waterfront mansion) where the concert would be held. It is taken looking north. I took a more general view of the yalı from the boat as we were approaching it but the vibrations of the engine caused a motion blur undetectable on the camera’s display screen. Only after I came home (back in the U. S.) and opened the file on a full size screen did I realize the blur (see workshop photo).

Surgeon General Salih Effendi was among the first graduating class of Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Adliye-i Şahane (Royal School of Legal Medicine), the first western-style medical school in the Ottoman Empire. He served as the Surgeon General of Sultan Abdülmecit. His descendants still live in this mansion. They organize weddings in the garden. They also host scheduled chamber music concerts in the grand hall of the mansion.

Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi Yalısı

Bu, konserin düzenleneceği yalının bir görüntüsüdür. Kuzeye doğru alınmıştır. Tekneyle yaklaşırken yalıyı daha genel bir bakış açısından aldım ancak motorun titreşimleri fotoğraf makinesinin ekranında görülemeyen hareket bulanıklığına neden olmuş. Ancak eve geri döndükten (ABD'de) ve dosyayı tam ebat ekranda açtıktan sonra bulanıklığı farkettim (atölye fotoğrafına bakınız).

Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndaki ilk batı tarzı tıp fakültesi olan Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Adliye-i Şahane'nin (Şahane* Adli Tıp Okulu) birinci mezuniyet sınıfı arasında yer aldı. Sultan Abdülmecit'in başhekimi olarak görev yapmıştır. Torunları hala bu konakta yaşıyor. Bahçede düğünler düzenliyorlar. Ayrıca konağın görkemli salonunda programlı oda müziği konserlerine ev sahipliği yapıyorlar.

Hello Murat,
On the picture in the workshop we can see how large this yalı really is.
Remarkable on the very limited space between the steep slope and the Bosphorus.
Its vivid red colour makes it an eye-catcher when making a boat tour.
In the WS we can see how it stands out against the greenery on the hill.

Hello Murat,
I can't recall seeing anything like this in Turkey. Surely such bright red wooden buildings aren't very common. I am more used to seeing them in Scandinavia. The WS shows us its elegant and original design, and it provides a stunning contrast to the blue tones of the sky and the water.

I can only bet and guess that this red beautiful building on the waterfront can be seen from far across the strait and the other side. Shine on the side light rays and contrast the blue sky and water.
