Photographer's Note

A shot taken in the vicinity of Ishak Pasha Saray.

A quiet and unspoilt place, but also an area haunted by unresolved political issues. As you travel there, you'll regularly see the army and police patrolling the roads- Turkish forces have been battling PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) in the southeast of the country since 1984. More than 30 thousand people have died in the fighting. PKK's original aim was to set up an independent Kurdish country, but have recently agreed to accept greater recognition of Kurdish rights within Turkey (e.g.making Kurdish an official language)- so far, the 15 million Kurds living in the country have not been recognized as an ethnic minority and haven't been able to be educated in their own language.
Will there finally be a solution to the problem?
