Photographer's Note

Hammams are among Turkish most famous traditions. Historical ones are to be found in any major cities and are often built as part of a larger complex which might include a mosque (small minaret in the back), a hospital and a library. To the Western eyes, the hammams could even contain a sort of mythical touch mostly driven by our own slanted Orientalist approaches. As the most common external sign, the red checkered towels perfectly embody this old and fascinating institution.
