Photographer's Note

The Zilkale Castle, Upper Fortress, and the Şenyuva and Köprüköy Bridges are amongst the few historical sights…

There is so much to do in Çamlıhemşin and its neighbouring areas… If you like a spot of adventure, the Fırtına (Storm) River is perfect for rafting and canoeing… The plateaus provide great routes for nature rambles and cycling tours. The Ayder spas are ideal for health-orientated people with its healing waters… The Andon Mineral Springs is known to cure indigestive and kidney problems. The region also boasts old architectural sights such as the Zilkale Castle, Upper Fortress and the Şenyuva and Köprüköy Bridges.

As for the plateaus, Çamlihemşin is the region’s best place for seeing them… The upper area of the Fırtına Basin is formed of plateaus. The upper sections of the Fırtına Basin are made up of two separate basins called Ayder and Çat. Above these basins are the Ayder, Lower and Upper Kavran, Palavit, Lower and Upper Ceymakcur, Hazindak, Pokut, Tirovit and Balakçur plateaus. It is impossible to reach the plateaus on foot. However, you can rent a jeep from town. Between these plateaus you will see amazing crater lakes which are perfect for bait-fishing. If your visit coincides with the month of August you’ll get to see the festivities held on these plateaus. The Vartevor festivities include traditional folk dances accompanied by bagpipes and 3-string fiddles played by the locals. These impressive festivities present a unique chance to learn the local culture. These plateaus are one of the world’s best trails for nature rambles…
The Fırtına River is ideal for rafting lovers… Canoeing is also available… This is not only Turkey’s, but also one of the world’s best-known rafting courses… The Kaçkarlar is suitable for mountain-climbing… The region is a favourite with mountain-climbing professionals… Here, you discover the true meaning of reaching above the clouds.
Another feature of the area is the spas… The most famous of the spas here are the Andon Mineral Springs in Rize and the Ayder Spa in Çamlihemşin... It is said that these waters cure indigestive and kidney diseases. In particular, Ayder Spa is overwhelmed by both Turkish and foreign visitors throughout summer-winter who are mesmerized by the natural beauty of the area.
If you take the Çat turning upon leaving Çamlihemşin and continue along the Fırtına River route, you will find one of the region’s rare historical sites the breathtaking Zilkale Castle rising up from amongst the green landscape. The castle was built before the 13th century by the Komnenos people. Again continuing along the same route, you will see the arched bridges built over the river in order to beat the unyielding environment. These bridges have similar architectural features and have been made mostly from chipped stone. The most famous of these is the Şenyuva Bridge.
The Black Sea never stops amazing us with its climate and geography! ...When you see this place you’ll realise once more that holidays aren’t just about sun, sea and sand and that every inch of this country hides a veritable piece of heaven…
