Photographer's Note

izmir/alsancak-kordonboyu.
The Kordonboyu (Cordon), the waterfront promenade, is the most fashionable section of town. It starts at the museum complex in Bahribaba Parki and stretches north along the busy harbor, past Konak Meydani, NATO's Southern Command headquarters, and the small Atatürk Müzesi (Atatürk Museum, Atatürk Cad., Alsancak 248. 232/421-7026. Tues.-Sun. 8:30-noon and 1-5), housed in a pale yellow Levantine building that was originally a house presented to Atatürk as a gift. Along the strip are several good seafood restaurants, all with a few tables outside overlooking the water. You can tour the area ($15 per ride) by fayton (horse-drawn carriages); carriages are stationed in the Cumhuriyet Meydani area of the Kordon.
