A closer view of the spectacular travertine terraces at Pamukkale in south west Turkey. Here you can see the 4 artificial pools at the top built as a compromise after the government banned bathing in the fg pools due to repeated damage. Just avoid the top one at left which was full of algae clumps. Additionally, the government banned illegal shacks selling drinks, snacks and souvenirs to the tourists, as wastewater runoff was turning the calcite from pure white to yellow brown. The travertine terraces are slowly recovering and are no longer yellow brown, but not quite pure white yet either. Here, the tourists look like ants.
