Photographer's Note

A few more pictures of Al Balad - the Old Town of Jeddah.
Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah, is situated on the eastern shore of the Red Sea. From the 7th century A.D. it was established as a major port for Indian Ocean trade routes, channelling goods to Makkah. It was also the gateway for pilgrims to Makkah who arrived by sea. These twin roles saw the city develop into a thriving multicultural centre, characterized by a distinctive architectural tradition.

Walking around the narrow streets of Jeddah, with houses often in need of repair, and also mosques and souq was fascinating. All is here genuine, there is not even one hotel. probably when the tourists are now admitted, Jeddah will also change like many historic towns all over the world.

Another view and some street scenes in Workshops.
