Photographer's Note
The Deir (from the Arabic al-Dayr, "the Monastery") is one of the most famous buildings and the largest of the city ancient Petra in Jordan .
The facade of 45 m wide and 42m high seems to be related to a funeral rite , probably the king of the Nabataean Obodas I. deified who ascended the throne at -96 . A large urn 9 m high is at its peak and is accessible by a staircase. Subsequently, the building will be reused by Christians as a monastery, which earned him his current name .
The interior is composed of a large back room where a podium is accessible by a staircase.
The arrival at the monastery is via a staircase of 800 steps carved into the rock .
This monument is protected as from 6 December 1985 , the site of Petra is inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO .
The site appears in the film Transformers 2: Revenge (2009) where he was supposed to be in Egypt .

Fascinating photograph. Such detail carved from the rock which you have shown so clearly in reference to the fascade. Thank you for your explanation as well. Judy

Bonjour Claude,
