Photographer's Note

Arasbaran forests, extended over an area of 164,000 hectares, are situated between Qaradagh Mountains to the north and Aras River to the south in the East Azerbayjan province of Iran.

Arasbaran is a vast mountainous region with an area of 900,000 hectares and is divided into northern and southern parts. The forests are mostly located in the northern section. The northern side, stretched over 558,000 hectares, encompasses 11 watersheds, three of which lack vegetation and the rest have forest coverage rates of 3 to 48 percent. 50 years ago, Arasbaran used to have between 250,000 and 300,000 hectares of forests, which has drastically shrunken today.

Iranian officials have been paying more attention to the rich resource, since 26 years ago, and 38 research schemes have been implemented in the area during this time.

Arasbaran has also been categorized as one of the biosphere reserves in the UNESCO’s Program on Man and the Biosphere (MAB).
