Photographer's Note

Dates, dates,
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps dates on my mind

I hope Ray Charles won't mind my borrowing and changing his song about Georgia.
Food is an important element of the experience of travelling, and one of the things I loved about Iranian food were its dates. So sweet and delicate, dissolving on your tongue and leaving your taste buds in extasy...and definitely the best ones were those we tried here, in Ezmirghan, a small oasis amidst kilometres of dry land and mountains. In terms of natural views, this was the place that I will remember as the most amazing in this country. Amazing not just for its beauty, but for the complete astonishment that you feel when you suddenly see this green paradise in a valley surrounded by vast nothingness. Date palms and rice fields which you see here are set against reddish rocks which makes the contrast even more memorable. There are pommengranades (oh, so juicy and sweet...) and apples and other fruit as well. Boys splash around in a small pool of cool water, girls...well, girls still have to leave their hejab on and watch...
The oasis is situated about 40 km from Tabas. There's no public transportation so you have to hire a taxi to get there.
