Photographer's Note

Unlike most other capitals conquered by his armies, Persepolis, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, was largely destroyed by Alexander the Great. But this site remains impressive. When fanatics wanted to raze what remained just after the 1979 revolution, the governor of the Fars province (the heart of Ancient Persia) and the people of Shiraz opposed vigorously and saved it.
