Photographer's Note

Yesterday the European Union decided to open accession negotiations with Turkey. In my opinion a big step forward for us all and a very positive sign in a world with more than its fair share of war and strife. A condition is that Turkey recognises Cyprus. This will open the way for the reunification of Cyprus after thirty years of Turkish occupation of the northern part of the island. The beautiful seaport of Kyrenia was a gem already in ancient times and famous throughout the middle ages, and deserves to be visited by more than the few tourists who venture into the occupied part these days. And it has only been possible to cross the demarcation line from the south since Cyprus joined the European Union on 1 May this year.
I hope that next time we visit Cyprus it will be possible to drive straight to Kyrenia without strict borderformalities. The cypriots - both the ones of Greek and the ones of Turkish origin - derserve it.

A snapshot taken against the sun as we walked around the corner and discovered the harbour for the first time.
