Photographer's Note

Arasta Sokaği, North Nicosia: the heart of Lefkoşa's bazaar area.

Officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC; Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), is a self-declared state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus. Recognised only by Turkey, Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community to be part of the Republic of Cyprus, though the reality on the ground supports the Turkish position.

But the people on the street, typified by these two outside a shop, were generally much more concerned with immediate domestic matters, as is true the world over. I think they were probably father and son. I'd love to know what they were debating: the older man's expression suggests they're weighing up a stock or cash-flow issue. Much more likely than a philosophical discussion about man's place in the universe. Or the future of Northern Cyprus.
