Photographer's Note

Yesterday was the best day we have had in Scotland this year, dry with glorious warm sunshine and little or no wind and the perfect day for a walk in the hills of the Scottish Borders. And here a couple of my walking companions are approaching the Fingland Bothy, a deserted old house sitting high in the hills above the village of Romannobridge and three miles (4.5 Km) distant from any public road. Although we did not enter this building, we did stop here and sat outside it to eat our sandwiches.

"Bothies" are either very old deserted buildings or small shelters which are scattered around the higher and more deserted parts of Britain and which can provide shelter or simple "no frills" accommodation for walkers and climbers. This one appears to have some sort of water supply and also some primitive drainage but no electricity or other luxuries. Some bothies have raised platforms on which one could spend the night in a sleeping bag but basically they provide no more luxury than a roof and shelter. Most are free to use for bona fide travellers though a small monetary donation is usually in order.

The Fingland Bothy is one of about half a dozen similar bothies in southern Scotland and is maintained under the auspices of the Borders Bothy Association.

This picture was taken using my wife's Canon G10 which is a bit easier to carry around the hills than my DSLR!

You can see a larger version on "beta" TE here.

P.S. I'm not quite sure if there's a problem here but, looking at this picture on TE it appears to have a very distinct pinkish cast to it. I have compared it a few times on my computer to the image which I uploaded and that does not seem to suffer from this pink colouration. I know that others have commented on this sort of thing before and I'm not sure if the fault lies with me or with the website - has anyone else noticed this same or similar effect?
