Photographer's Note

Alnmouth was our last stop on our way home from our brief visit to Northumberland. This shot was taken about 90° to the left of my previous one from here, and you can clearly see how the River Aln flows into the North Sea.

As we were walking along the beach on the way back to the car, I noticed this family who seemed to be heading home from a day on the beach. I have lived all my life on the North Sea coast and spent many days of my childhood similarly occupied. One of my “going home” memories is the messy business of getting the wet sand off the feet to put on shoes and socks. (Yes….socks! Some dreadful illness might befall if you don’t wear the socks!) I remember it involved trips to the sea for buckets of water with which to wash the feet, and then trying to dry them before getting them covered with more sand. A kind of balancing act with feet waving in the air ensued, while struggling to put on socks over damp feet. People are not so fussy these days thankfully.
