Photographer's Note
Taken from Ascot Racecourse, not the best day for the races with a gloomy and cold day, but was enjoyable to visit one of the biggest horse racing venues in the world....and as an added bonus I left with the same amount of money as I walked in with.

perfect shot! This was a great idea to focus on the child and let the horse be the BG rather than the focus of the ascott race photo ;-)
Voted!

Hi Brendan,
What a capture you have here! The shapness of the foreground and the little girl against the blurry action looks amazing. You handled it very well. You even managed to reflect England's famous weather. ))
Congrats.

Nice title here Brendan, and one of your better ones as of late if you don't mind me saying so (the photos and not just the title though). The lines, the muted colours, the motion etc etc...great stuff!

A very smart composition, Brendan. The child is the subject, and the blurred horse means that something is happening in the meantime, but whop knows what the child is actually looking at.
All the components of the picture are then in their perfect position.

Hi Brendan,
No pompous hats on elderly ladies on this Ascot shot! Nice to see that it's possible to enjoy the place as is, not just a place to be seen at. Child's viewpoint well presented. Mix of static and fast moving subjects. Sky fits with the feeling, luckily it doesn't look completely flat.

Super good one, the speed is just perfect, the creamy bokeh is lovely, nicely composed with the structure which includes life, nice one...

Saw this on your flickr gallery, 'tis a shot and half! You've set the standard high when it comes to racing photography: timing is impeccable here.
It's Spring Carnival time here and I hope to make it to one of the major meets at Flemmington-- time and equine influenza permitting.
Did you end up even due to luck or because you didn't have a little flutter...?

Hi Brendan, kind of devil today for you considering all the "6" you have in your total account ;)
Beautiful one, excellent mux of motion / sharpness, i love the result, you pushed the detail and precision to caught a horse with a pink touch to fit with the young girl pullover
Great one

You are so wrong Brendan - so absolutely fluting up the wrong tree on that line about leaving with the same amount of money as you went in with - this picture is worth a mint trust me - just choose who and where you're going to sell it - top notch mate - you left far richer than when you went in!

Things are looking so stretched for an Autumn get together - but just had an idea - you into street fairs -

Hi Brendan,
Nice shot! Like the idea of the speed blur on the horse and the little girl hanging there. A pity of the beam on the same level as her head. But the cloudy day doesn't disturb at all! Thanks for sharing!

Fabulous! Great idea to focus on the kid and blur the horse and rider. The light is very good, too.

Amazing work, Brendan. I probably would have blurred the little girl, you just kept your hand firm and spot this amazing scene so perfectly. Superb. The best way to shoot races, I'd say. Powerful.

Really cool shot, Brendan. I love the way this is articulated in several successive layers from the foreground to the background.

Cheers Brendan,
I think that this is a great picture, composition wise I would say excellent. The remaining traces of light of the horse passing by and the little kid just amazed probably looking at the horse that passed by a few fractions of a second before..just excellent!! No to talk about the contrast of the greyish sky and the green of the grass and its great sharpness. It is several pictures in one!
Great job and thanks for sharing

Man, is that great, Brendan - a super sports shot, of course, at which you excel, but there's that sly poetic element creeping in as well. Really splendid, makes one smile from ear to ear.

Hi Brendan. Just had a look at your recent work - really good, especially this one. You would think sharply defined wire fencing would be boring, but not in this context. Amazing that you managed to get a shot like this at Ascot with only the three living things in it. I gather this horse is running last, as the kid is looking at the rest of the field? Lovely light and superb and appropriate shallowness of field, or whatever you call the opposite of dof. Wonderful shot.

Andrew

Man Brendan,
There are some great divisions in this shot...so much depth not having anything to do with aperture.
I love that the young girl is facing towards the direction of travel of the horse...somehow this provides some drama to the photo. There isn't resolution to the conflict...I.E., the horse is coming, she sees the horse...all is well. We anticipate the outcome, yet we don't really know. Movement and time, drama...excellent.
Chris.

Hi Brendan,
Very smart shot!
The combination of the running horse of the motion blur with about 1/30 slow shutters and children on the fence is so marvelous.
Best wishes, Hisashi

Hello Brendan. Just having a random look through TE and stumbled across this shot. I'm glad I did. What a great one. Love the movement of the horse compared with the sharpness of the child. Chris
