Photographer's Note
This is my third post of Rievaulx Abbey and it shows a closer view of the south wall of the presbytery. Although the arches are uniform along the wall, this particular arch with steps is thought to have been the doorway for sick and elderly monks to enter the church from the near-by abbey infirmary.
Of course the church was the most important building of any abbey. The Cistercian monks at Rievaulx followed the rules of St. Benedict and worshipped in the church eight times daily. The times varied depending on the time of year, but in summer, the first service would have been at 2am and the last one at 8pm. In winter the first service would be at 3:30am and the last one at 6:15pm. The lay brothers, who did most of the manual work, were allowed to worship fewer times.

Hi Kath,
Beautiful symetry in the arches. Like the repeating effect in this good seen vertical composition. Some might say a human element would be nice, but for me such places work better without them.
Very nice picture.

Hello Kath,
The most closed angle and the short plane give us a more detailed vision and are a good complement to your previous post.
The overlapping of the arches and the windows opened for the blue sky they have a great graphism, and your centered setting provides an image to us with many symmetry.
An excellent lighting and a beautiful natural colors in this good work.
Best regards,

Hi Kath,
A close up this time of this impressive abbey, good use of the vertical format, the green is quite a contrast to the stone architecture.

Hello Kath,
Une vue plus rapprochée ici qui nous permet de voir plus précisément les détails architecturaux de cette ancienne abbaye. J'aime le cadrage vertical et le contraste des tons est ici excellent.
Well done

Hello Kath -
I do like the repeating elements of this image - arch within an arch. The lighting is just perfect as the shadows add contrast and depth to the image. I am torn between saying a reference element (a person) might be useful here or whether it is OK as it stands. I am not sure but the image looks a bit skewed or maybe it is just the perspective. Anyway, well done and great note.
Thank you for sharing.

Taking a step to your right would have enabled you to align the apex of the two archways, lose the small air-gap between the right hand columns, and show a more equal amount of blue sky through the two small windows at the top of the frame.
With composition like this that relies on symmetry, I think it's important to get these little things right.
Other than these little niggles, this is very well taken, and the composition works well.
Cheers,
Ben

Hello kath,
I love your seri on this abbey. here you have done a perfect picture on symetry subject. perhaps a little more light on upper part could have been valuable but with risk to have the lawn over exposed.
kind regards

As your title says, Arches everywhere. Your composition is spot on with everything level and straight and the detail is good too. I like the composition with an arch within the main arch on the photo.

Hi Kath.
The symetry in this contribution (and also in the previous one, but I slightly prefer this one because of the dynamic vertical format) makes it really dynamic. The eye is really captured by the geometry of the arches and follows their magnificient curves. I like also the combination of the old stone textures and the grassy fields. That's a beautiful composition and your info note is good too! Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Kath. There is a good contrast between the sandstone and the grass and a good perspective too with the arches that seem to narrow and open onto the meadow. Good symmetry.

Hi Kath. This is the one good thing about not having a wide-angle is that it forces you to get creative with your compositions and you aren't allowed to be lazy just to "fit everything in". The light was on your side and you got some nice colors and contrast. Well seen Kath!

Hi Kath,
Another very good photo of this abbey. The view thru the church to the grassfields and the row of four (or three) columns on the left create a nice depth. The colors and details are beautiful and the sunlight on the inside of the church adds a nice effect.

Hi Kath,
Another really interesting photograph on this prestigious places. I like much here this close up view which shows us in detail architecture. Beautiful light which accentuates the relief and gives depth. I appreciate also contrast with the vegetation. This place being really enthralling I found an Internet site I think instructive on the history of this abbey.

Olá Kath, looking back for what I've been loosing, I found an extraordinary series. I choose this one, although I like your view from above, as well. The effect of "Arches Everywhere" is impressive and I love your perfect frontal composition. A wonderful place full of photo oportunities!
The ws has also an interesting repetition effect and I usually like more that kind of perspectives, but you really surprised me with your photos of this series.
