We had a chat with Paul about the blue hour phenomenon recently. Searching for answers, I found an interesting article on physical basis of twilight in Wikipedia:

I don’t think this article is simple and clear enough for me, but it was certainly very educational to read it. From what it said, it seems we are more correct to call the blue hour a “nautical dusk”. I thought it is very appropriate especially for this photo since it was taken at the coast.

The photo presents again the pier in Saltburn-by-the-Sea. I took several photos there before and after the blue hour. It seems that when the sky had the blue hour color, the sea was slightly too dark already. Hence here a photo where the sea was at the blue hour even though the sky, which I cropped, was slightly brighter.

I wanted to fill in the exposure time of 15 seconds but TrekEarth does allow me to do it anymore.

Hello Mariusz,
I've never seen a picture of a sea with such 'blue hour'-colours.
If I understood well, you have to take such a photo before the sky gets the attractive blue colour.
Do you want to introduce the term 'nautical dusk' on TE? That will be a difficult task :)

Bardzo ladny widok na molo, ciekawe spojrzenie z gory.
Piekne swiatlo i Twoje ulubione kolory.
Wspominam nasze wspolne lapanie niebieskiej godziny.
Ale jakos nie mam narazie czasu chodzic z zegarkiem w reku o danej porze.
Twoje wskazowki sie przydaly i probowalem kilka razy.
Moze jeszcze kiedys zapoluje na niebieska godzine i pokaze na TE ;)

Hello Mariusz,

A good aerial view of the pier with striking blue hour colours of the sea. About the only time of day that the North sea can match the color of the water around Cornwall! Stunning warm cold colour contrasts too, with impeccable sharpness. Tfs!

This photo looks quite eerie, due to the long exposure time smoothing out the waves so the pier looks like it's floating on blue clouds. Excellent sharpness and light control.

Hello Mariusz,

This is a super spot for photography and with the inclusion of the blue hour colours you have taken an outstanding, memorable photograph!
The pier looks to be illuminated underneath!
The sea looks like a swirling mist of clouds
Love it!

Are there two people taking photographs upwards?

Giving a new meaning to the Blue Hour, the sea here is so blue. The PoV is well chosen, the pier extending into the sea and the buildings all carefully placed to make a well presented image.

Hello Mariusz, I have seen the pier at Saltburn on many occasions but here you have captured a magical effect. The blue sea is so bright and I love the way that the pier is lit up.
The darker foreground pushes our eyes towards the beautiful light and colours.

Oh, don't get me started about TE. What a disgrace.
How this site hasn't been fixed yet, is such a pathetic example of the owners and operators. They just don't give a damn. Anyways....your shot is an example of what we need more of on TE, high quality photographs, not just touristy snap snots.
the underlight glow, the blues, the clarity, the star light at the end of the pier...everything is just so good. One of your best posts. cheers

This is a dreamy and beautiful shot. The long exposure makes the water look so silky, and the colors are great. I like the POV looking down, too. The lights under the pier are also very eye-catching. Take care!
