Finchale Priory in autumn, a photo from Durham, England

Photographer's Note

I have visited Finchale Priory, near Durham in July this year already. I was impressed with the ruins, but the light was rubbish, so I didn’t share any photos from that trip with you. Today I revisited this beautiful place. It was a predominantly sunny day but even though judging from the map I thought the morning would be optimal time to be there, it appeared that the light was quite harsh, and there was plenty of shade around. There was a lot of light along the River Wear, which you see in this photo. Those few leaves in autumnal colors which were still holding on to the tree branches, were literally glowing in the sunshine. In a way it was good to have the trees already naked so that I could use them to frame the priory, but it was not easy to find a clearance good enough. In the end I had to resort to multiple exposures on the tripod to balance the exposure better, something what I rarely do nowadays.

Fantastic view of the priory ruins from across the river. It was a wonderful autumn day with superb and warm sidelight, which showed the few leaves still in the overhanging tree branches so well. They make a great and colourful frame. Very well done.

Hello Mariusz,
I like this composition. The tree branches make a nice frame for the priory on the other side of the river. The sunlight really does bring out the red and yellow colors, too. Take care!

Hello Mariusz,
The ruins of the priory are presented in an excellent natural frame.
In summertime it would be much more difficult to find a good opening in the branches for a full view of the priory.
The few leaves that are left add very fiery colours to the picture.

Hi Mariusz,
Fabulous saturated colours make this photo a winner. The sparse leaves do not hide the priory ruins which we can see well enough. The splash of bright green grass in front of the ruins makes a good contrast with the red and orange leaves.

I really like this!
I always appreciate photographs which have been anchored in the f/g, to give a good sense of depth.
The red and yellow leaves are very effective, the twisting twigs having a filigree effect over the view of priory in the b/g.

Hello Mariusz, a picture that was well worth your effort, it is delightful.
Two pictures in one really; we have the beautiful colours of the leaves , so bright and vivid, and the ruins of the Priory to study.
There is a surprising palette of colours in this picture.
Excellent presentation.
I had never heard of the Priory before, even though many years ago, we used to visit this area quite regularly.

I liked the use of these nude trees as a curtain to the ruins. the river and the golden leaves added a special mood and the light was well used. excellent.

Really wonderful combination of these ruins and some very colourful autumn leaves. I can imagine how dull those walls would look on a grey day. You chose the angle perfectly. That opening between branches is just right.

A masterful composition, the charm of the Priory ruins, on the green bank of the river, is enhanced to the maximum with the twisted branches of this tree and the few leaves that remain with that red color, Fantastic !!!!!! !!
