Postcard from Bradford, a photo from West Yorkshire, England

Photographer's Note

You may remember I had a complex that five years ago I moved to the town which had the title “the worst place to live in the UK”? Well I have followed the ranking and the city which in recent years took over the first place was Bradford. Before going for a trip there I have searched the internet asking the question: "How dangerous is it really?" One article tried to argue that in the most of the ten criteria which are used to define a dangerous city, Bradford is below national average, it is just for homicide and violent crime where it scores much above the average British level. I relaxed reading that.

I suppose the most popular spot selected for a postcard from Bradford would be a city hall. However since the percentage of Muslims in Bradford according to Wikipedia was in 2011 about 25% (Bradford is sometimes called "Bradistan") I decided to pick for a postcard one of the numerous Bradford Mosques: Bradford Grand Mosque called formally Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam Grand Mosque. It is still under construction and it was impossible to even cross the gate hence my photo across the wall. Here is the official website of the mosque where you can find more information.

There are not too many photos from Bradford on TrekEarth. It is definitely an off-the-beaten-track destination.

Cześc Mariusz,

Niebezpieczny, ale jednak zdecydowałeś się pojechać. Bardzo ładna pocztówka. Trochę dziwna geometria tego lewego minaretu. Ale minaret bardzo ładne, podobnie jak zielona kopuła, atrakcyjne niebo z tymi chmurkami.

let me ask you, did you have to do any perspective correction post processing? the verticals are very vertical.

you couldn't ask for a better backdrop, the blue and white sky is fantastic. So is the lighting and peach/red colors.
can you walk up to the platforms? wonderful post!

Hello Mariusz! That is in deed a great picture! I love these beautiful colors. Great skies add to it. Also your framing is perfect. I would have tried to use HDR here, to lighten up a little bit the shadow on the wall, just enough to give some little texture to it (but maybe the large picture has texture there). Nice picture of a nice building. Great light and good sharpness too. Like it a lot.

The new mosque is an impressive building with fine pastel colours. The green dome and the two minarets stand out against the attractive sky of blue and some thin clouds. The light shining right at the front of the mosque couldn't have been better either.

A wonderful post card of this beautiful Mosque . May be the distortion correction is a little too strong , but that is a matter of taste .

Swietny kadr i kolorystyka tego meczetu. Przy robieniu szerokim obiektywem powstaja zniksztalcenia z ktorymi ciezko sie walczy. Jestem przy tym zwolennikiem pozostawienia niewielkich zbieżnosci bo czasem wyprostowanie na sile daje nienaturalny efekt.U ciebie doszla dodatkowo boczna perspektywa , ale w sumie poradziles sobie bardzo dobrze.Miejsce na uboczu, ale architektura ciekawa

Despues de leer tu nota sobre esta ciudad, no estaria en mi lista de lugares visitables.
Esta grandiosa mezquita en construccion, da ideal del poderio islamico en la ciudad, resulta muy vistosa, pero sin ninguna lectura nunca hubiera pensado que esta construccion estaria en U.K.Hi, Mariusz.
After reading your note about this city, it would not be on my list of places to visit.
This great mosque under construction, gives an idea of the Islamic power in the city, is very showy, but without any reading would never have thought that this building would be in U.K.
A magnificent color that gives a lot of chromatic richness to the image.

It is always interesting to see photos from places not much visited here, and this mosque is wonderful! It looks really imposing with these towers, and its strong colors make it really stand out, I suppose even from the distance! Excellent colors and sharpness! Wonderful composition!

Defintely off-the-beaten track, Mariusz, and surely worth posting a couple of pictures from, if only to get a different view from the UK. I know of Bradford and its reputation, but I must admit I've never vistited it (nor wanted to, tbh).

This is a great capture of a beautiful mosque. Where I live, mosques are not allowed to have minarets, most of them look like garages from the outside.

Thanks Mariusz for posting this colourful photo of Bradford and adding to the small album of the city !
I am amazed at the tolerance of Britain concerning religions : This would raise countless protests in France where anti-Muslim feelings are very strong unfortunately, and where I cannot imagine any city counting anywhere near 20 mosques !
And yet I feel the construction of this mosque adds some beauty (both physically and morally) to a city thad badly needs it.
The choice of pink stone and green roofs is a very good one to brighten a place which is so often associated with grey and black ...
You photographed it at its best, basking in the sun under a beautiful sky !
I couldn't help smiling when I read about your relaxed feelings concerning the bad reputation of the city : "It's really below national average, except for homicide and violent crime which score much above British level" ! I hope you and your family aren't in any danger !
