Photographer's Note
The word "Vennel" deriving from the old French word venelle meaning "alley" or "lane" or as found in many Edinburgh places as a "Close"(from Wikipedia).
The Venel, an ancient stairs-case rises from Grassmarket , a valley at the foot from the Edinburgh Castle, partially shown on this picture. At the Vennel's top found the 1593 built remnants of the Flodden-wall which I will post a photo of in the future.
Location 55.9462, -3.1969 on the map.
RAW converted into JPEG, F10.0, exp.1/80, ISO160.

Hello Ike,
I like this composition very much; it is well framed and full of charm. You have handled the rather poor lighting very well indeed; the image displays excellent colours and clarity.

Hello Ike,
you composed this picture in a wonderful way, it offers us a very rich and interesting description of this very picturesque neighbourhood, so close to the Castle. Excellent clarity offers us so much to observe and enjoy, the perspectives are smooth and inviting, the colours moody and beautiful. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Hello Ike,
Excellent vertical composition for this view down the narrow staircase towards Edinburgh Castle on its rock in the background. I like the variety of autumn colours and the calm mood that the place breathes.

Hello Ike
Lovely picture with the stair that brings us down to the more humble houses and brings us to the place we have to climb to visit the ancient castle.
Excellent photographed in one shot.

Bonjour Ike,
Une bonne idée que ce cadrage vertical. Il va chercher le bas des marches et le haut du château .L'ensemble est d'une grande netteté et a de bien jolies couleurs.Le lampadaire balance bien l'ensemble.

Hello Ike,
This is a fine composition with interesting features in every part. The steps and the black railing create good depth, in the real sense of the word. The light is excellently handled, with perfect, pleasant colours.
Kind regards,
Gert

Ciao Ike
Bella serie di architetture, il taglio verticale ti ha permesso di metterle una sopra all'altra.
Mi incuriosisce molto il palo del lampione, non so come siano riusciti ad applicare gli adesivi così in alto.....
Saluti

Hi Ike,
A superb high pov overlooking the alley leading up to Edinburgh Castle. Excellent sharpness and a pleasant diffused light. The lamppost adds a graphic element. Tfs!

Hi Ike,
The distance between the houses and the castle is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the houses and of the castle. The good luminosity is giving nice tints to the colours. Have a nice day.

A very different image of Edinburgh to most that we see. It's not always easy to illustrate just how steep some parts of Edinburgh are, but this one does it beautifully.
Great composition, strong enough that items like the white van and the coach, which could be distracting, blend into the background very quickly.
Thanks too for the derivation of vennel, I've used the term most of my life, knowing what it meant but not its origin.

Bonjour, cher Ike,

Hi Ike.
Spectacular composition, with the great contrast, between this typical street that goes down a steep slope, to the foot of the hill, where the beautiful castle rises defiantly and we see in part, very well positioned the street lamp to add charm.
A very interesting work, very well presented.
Very good brightness and perfect sharpness.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Best Regards.
Luis.

Hello Ike,
Now this is the most unusual, and one of the most beautiful depictions of the acropolis of Edinburgh. In vertical format, you have depicted a Victorian Era side street, with the castle looming above the city, sitting majestically on its giant perch.
Happy New Year, Ike.

Hello Ike,
I absolutely love this shot.
It combines the unique architecture of the city and sets it against the backcloth of the castle. It gives importance to both aspects without letting the castle dominate.
Excellent use of the stairway and the narrow gap to funnel us through to the b/g.
Best wishes,
Bev :-)

Ike, a castle can be seen from that narrow alley. The word venelle is indeed used in French. The stairs lead to a charming residential area. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hi Ike,
this is a very original angle on the Edinburgh Castle. I have never seen it before and I have not been in this area probably at all. THis is quite inspiring to go there again and explore some side streets.
Nice capture with a typical SCottish weather. Great use of the lamppost set against the sky.
Very well done,
M
