Photographer's Note

One of the presents I received when I retired was an "adventure" token. I chose to go up in a hot air balloon. This photograph was made during the early stages of the inflation of the huge envelope. Hot air was blasted in the bottom vent, while several people, both inside and outside the balloon sorted out all the strings. Of course I took a load of photographs during the flight, but when I came to look at them, this image seemed to me to be more interesting from a photographic/compositional point of view than the vistas of misty countryside. A sense of the vast size of the envelope, which supported a basket that could take 16 people, can be seen here, with the 3 people giving a sense of scale.
