Photographer's Note

Making an early start can be rewarding when the mist lies in the Lyd Valley.

The River Lyd rises at Lyd Head which is on Corn Ridge, a vast sweep of hill between Great Links Tor and High Willhays.
It flows through the dramatic Lydford Gorge,the Lyd Valley and on into the River Tamar at Lifton.

You have successfuly captured that rare combination of excellent light and mist so well done for getting up early. The sheep and the tree are excellent FG subjects but made much more interesting by the fabulous moody BG. Excellent image.

A fantastic capture ! The BG and the Fg seem to be two different pictures . The superb light on the FG , the mist on the BG ... the effect is remarkable . The composition is great , too , with the sheep and teh tree perfectly placed .

this picture is composed in a fscinating way with so many interesting, well placed and intriguing elements, the result is awesome. The diagonal of the subtly lit grassy slope adds dynamism; the dark naked trees with their branches spreading against the mist offer drama; the layers half hidden by and half emerging from the mist give a captivating intrigue; the two serious lambs looking towards us are like guards of a fairyland. I love the exquisite lighting and colours, the delightful morning atmosphere. Beautiful picture, congratulations and thank you!

Wow, what a corker this is. It's an absolutely stunning early morning picture with everything - well, the sheep and the tree - in just the right place for balance. Very nice highlights in the foreground grass and sheep's coat, and those wonderful mist-shrouded layers of fields behind. I find the outline of the twisty tree and fine branches against the mist to be fascinating. Really super shot.

It seems a pity to give this a critique for it is a most beautiful shot that is a pleasure to look at.
However, I will tell you what I appreciate most: first, the mood with the enveloping mist, is almost magical; then the sheep and the skeletal tree are so well positioned within the frame and, lastly, the light illuminating the grass and just thickening the mist, is superb.

A admire people who can get up early to experience this!

A beautiful and extremely calming composition, which certainly stands out and I love the way the low sun light just highlights the sheep and the green slopes. The tree is positioned in the picture so that it frames the scene, which works really well. Beautiful tones, the softness and mist in the background and its effect add the overall serenity of the image, pease and quiet. Very different Leslie, in fact the more I look the better it gets. This certainly has loads of atmosphere. Fine photo works, Congrats, TFS

I think I recognise this valley and those sheep from another picture taken that early morning! :)

A perfectly composed photograph, the tree perfectly placed on the "thirds" line and cleverly separating the clear foreground from the misty distant view. The lovely sidelighting provided by the low warm early morning sun has illuminated the ewe and lamb and the mist beautifully. And, of course, the distant trees viewed through the mist are just magical.

And were you looking due north here? :)

So beautiful Leslie! So English too, or as I imagine England to be after reading the Romantic poets. I can almost imagine Coleridge or Wordsworth taking a morning stroll in such a glorious setting with its soft light, its rolling hills and morning mist.I also think that the trees in England and Europe have so much character compared to the gumtrees. the early morning atmosphere in this picture is superb. the mist is wonderful and helps to isolate the lne tree to the right of the picture. the colours are beautifully lit by the sun. and the two sheep are placed perfectly to complete the image.

As I was saying to Noel, Britain and Ireland have some spooky trees and they make fantastic photographic subjects. The mist, the colourful foreground and the mysterious background all combine beautifully to make a formidable composition. Great stuff.

Looking at your gallery, I found many landscapes and I choose this one for the atmosphere given by the mist, contrasting with the sunny area at the FG. Sheeps are well located as the bare tree, according to the rule of the third.
