Photographer's Note

St. Kilda is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and is the most isolated point in the British Isles. It is located 40 miles west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. In calm seas, the crossing from North Uist takes approximately 3 hours. However the seas are often very rough and crossings rarely occur between September and May.

The main island is named Hirta. It was populated for approximately 2000 years but was finally evacuated at the islanders request in 1930.

There were many reasons for the evacuation. Life on the island was very difficult. The islanders would have to scale extremely high cliffs and sea stacks in order to catch birds for food and eggs. The islanders would sell eggs, feathers and tweed to their landlord on the Isle of Skye in order to pay rent, however during the late 19th century, the value of these products on the mainland fell drastically and soon the islanders were in serious arrears. At this time, St. Kilda was frequently visited by tourists from mainland Britain who wanted to catch a glimpse of Britain's most primitive community. This also brought problems as the islanders began to catch a glimpse of mainland life and began to understand how much easier life would be away from St. Kilda. As the young began to leave the island the community began to fail. There were fewer young men to catch birds and eggs and it soon became apparent that evacuation was the only answer. On the 29th August 1930, the final 36 inhabitants set sail for mainland Scotland at the government’s expense.

The story is much more complex than this and there are several websites and books that tell the story much better than I.

This picture shows the village street which is still present on the island. In the summer months the National Trust for Scotland has residents on the island who undertake conservation activities.
