Photographer's Note

Just to show that the bridge does have a more modern raising and lowering mechanism than the cogwheel shown in yesterday's upload! That wheel and its gearbox were fitted to the new bridge, installed in 2007, because it was required to be a replica of the one erected about 1950. Now hydraulically operated with electrical controls, it takes 2 minutes to lower instead of the 10 minutes it used to take with the wheel. So I don't know why they keep it raised on a calm day like yesterday; but I suppose the harbourmaster deserves his day of rest too.
