Photographer's Note
An Annan haaf net fisherman walks out across the Solway sands to fish for Salmon. In the distance are stacked metal poles used for hanging poke nets, another way of fishing on the Solway. The land hump you see is Waterfoot and is at the mouth of the river Annan where there is a cairn erected to Robbie Burns, Scotland's national poet (bard). It has a compass type thing that shows the distance from Annan to many far flung places in the world as Burns spent time in Annan as an excise (customs) man.

Hello, Bev.
Another fine picture for your Haaf Netting theme!
Fantastic textures in the soft, wet sand with gooey footprints and lovely reflections, a sharp horizon and perfect composition. The fisherman and his net are nicely balanced by the interesting outcrop of land to the right and the central poke net poles. Again, a very interesting and informative note.
Out of interest, I see that the sunlight here is coming pretty much directly from the left, a condition in which a polariser would have its maximum effect. Have you tried using a polariser with these shots here? It might bring out some more features in the sky but, on the other hand, it might considerably dull those nice bright water reflections. It might be worth experimenting if you haven't already.
The other thing I had thought about (and this is by no means a criticism) is perhaps standing back a little and using a slightly longer focal length. That would foreshorten the perspective somewhat and make those distant features look a bit larger. Again, just a thought, Bev.
An excellent shot!
Kind Regards,
John.

Oh, what a great wide view, Bev!
I love the color and texture of the sand and it is perfectly composed and everything is beautifully balanced. The rock in the distance is at a perfect angle to the fisherman. Jeeze, it must be just SO cool to live there. What a view! Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Shelly

Hello Bev. What for a wonderful ligh.Fischer man. A photo from the world of the work. Everything looks exotic. The red-brown shining sand is very beautiful. Top. Regards, Wolfgang.

Hello Bev,
The first thing that strikes me here is the shadow on the sand. Although the beam of the net is at quite an angle on the fisherman's shoulders, the shadow makes it look as if he is carrying it horizontally.
I also like the way that the line of footprints leads exactly from the bottom left corner of the picture, making a diagonal towards the man.
That lump of land on the horizon, although quite small, provides essential balance to the composition.
The net itself, the main element of the picture, is neatly placed so that the horizon cuts through the junction of the beam and the handle. This adds great strength to the composition.
Lovely soft colours of sea and mud.
Although John suggests using a polariser – and I am a great enthusiast for them - I think in this case the paleness of the sky is just right for the subject.
Kind regards,
Peter.
PS: I am looking forward to seeing some pictures of the fisherman's catch!

Hi Beverley,
your impressions of the Solway sands are very fascinating, the haaf net fishing is such an "old fashioned" procedure! It reminds me of the traditional shrimp fishing at Schleswig-Hostein's west coast.
Very beautiful light and an excellent POV. TFS!
Warm regards
Harriet

Hello Bev,
This is a very nice and "clean" composition, in spite of the mud. Considering the long way these men have to walk through the mud, I cannot but ask myself if they do it for the catch or for the reverence of a very old tradition that should be kept alive at any price. I find the haaf fishing quite fascinating, but rather curious, and you have made a fine contribution to TE by showing it to us.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Bev!
This must be a photo of those Scottish beaches you mentioned to me before!
I can only now imagine what kinda abstract images might be caught in this unearthy place. And an exciting minimalism you have reached up here. My only wish is for a much worse weather when i'll be there on September >:D
Best rgs,
Deniz

Hi Bev,
It is a very attractive composition. I like the tracks of steps on the wet sand, the shadow of the net and the fisherman. The light is sweet as the colors of the sky and the water. The opposition with the almost red gold-coloured sand is very successful.
Have a nice sunday
Diane
