Photographer's Note

I took this photo whilst on a boat trip down the western coast of the island of Montserrat.

For centuries the town of Plymouth was the capital of this small island. However, starting in 1995 a series of volcanic eruptions meant that the city had to be abandoned.

On 21st August 1995 ash from an explosion covered this city. In December of the same year residents were evacuated as a precaution but were allowed to return to their homes a few months later. On 25th August 1997 a major eruption occurred which killed 19 people working in the central farmlands of the island. Again the residents were evacuated and a further series of eruptions in August 1997 covered the town in several meters of ash and mud.

Approximately 4000 people had lived in Plymouth, and it was the home to the islands businesses and government buildings. Many of the facilities had to be rebuilt elsewhere on the island but more than half of the islands population emigrated and have not returned to the island.
