Photographer's Note

During the summer at a local car show I spotted this fine example of the infamous and iconic DMC-12 designed by John Zachary DeLorean in 1975.
Main design features of the car were its gull-wing doors and its distinctive stainless steel bodywork left unpainted.
John DeLorean who had worked his way up through the US motor industry and became the youngest ever executive of General Motors founded the DeLorean Motor Company on October 1975. Initial investment came from loans from the Bank of America and private loans from TV personalities and enterainers like Johnny Carson,Sammy Davis Jr and Roy Clark.DeLorean also thought by building a factory to produce these cars in a country with high unemployment further financial investents could be gained.
The british government keen to create jobs in Northern Ireland and reduce sectarian violence stepped in and offered $120 million of the $200 million start up cost to build the factory in Dunmurray in Belfast.
The first cars began to roll off the assemblyline in early 1981 but due to a number of factors like poor build quality of the early models, distribution costs and cash flow problems, production stopped the following year and the factory closed having just produced a total of around 9000 models.
In a last ditch attempt to raise money for the ailing company Delorean was filmed by undercover FBI agents trying to do a drugs deal but was later aquitted of the charges on the basis of entrapment.
Probably the most famous claim to fame of this car was when it appeared in the film Back to the Future as the time machine invented by eccentric scientist Doctor Emmet Brown.
