Photographer's Note

Bridgnorth is a town in Shropshire on the River Severn. It is made up of High Town and Low Town. Originally High and Low Towns were accessed by a flight of very steep steps.Work began in 1891 to construct a cliff railway. It was opened in 1892. It was made up of two carriages, the tank of the upper carriage was filled with water and the lower one emptied of water. The weight of the upper made it descend whilst the lower ascended. The hydraulic system was eventually replaced by electric motors in 1944. The track is 201 feet long and it rises 111feet.
