Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
Yesterday, I introduced you to Helmsley Castle which is situated just 3km from Rievaulx Abbey.
Details of the castle can be found on my previous post.
Better seen in the large format by right clicking on NEW TAB.
Here, you can see the East Tower, taken through the doorway of the West Tower.
Robert de Ros, inherited the castle and was Lord of Helmsley from 1258 to 1285. His marriage to Isabel d'Aubigny (heiress to Belvoir Castle) funded the building of the new hall and kitchen, as well as strengthening the castle. He built a wall dividing the castle into north and south sides, with the southern half for the private use of the lord's family in the new hall and this East Tower, and the northern half containing the old hall to be used by the steward and other castle officials.
To get this view was quite difficult for me!
I remember almost kneeling, to capture the East Tower within the archway and to stay steady, without the use of a tripod, was a hard task!
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

A great shot Bev, well done! Framed beautifully with the off centre remains of a wall adding to the appeal. Well done for keeping your balance. I'm afraid my hips aren't up to crouching any more.

Amitiés.

Hello Bev,
This is a composition in the famous "Silvio style", but I never thought he had to suffer such trouble to find the right view through an arch. ;-) Obviously it was worth the efforts, because you left with a good composition and an excellent exposure and sharpness even without a tripod. The tower is quite beautiful and very "inspiringly medieval".
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
You're rewarded for the effort made because the East Tower is completely within the frame without touching it anywhere!
The stones of the small wall on the central foregroud leads our eyes well to the still upright tower.
This view of Helmsley Castle is much more impressive than your previous picture.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Beverley,
Great view of the old castle tower, you made excellent use of the dark doorway in the foreground, which also add a great contrast between light and shadow. I also like those empty windows through which the cloudy sky can be seen.

Hi Bev,
You had a good idea to use the arch to frame the tower. The point of view is showing the details of the Easy Tower. The light is giving good colours rendering. Have a nice day.

Hello Bev, Wonderful view of this ruined twoer in also ruined window. Spectacular composition. My Soiny camera has rotating screen, so there is no need for me to lie on the floor or to be on knees. Beautiful picture.

Hello Bev,
Its like I'm looking at this castle through a 'kneey-hole'......as its turned out to be a Fabulous knees shot. Its worth the extra double points from me. It would be very funny to see you adjusting yourself almost kneeling to take this shot....I do hope that you were wearing a pant that day.
Simple little castle with quite a history to it. I must admit that you do know how to make a castle looks amazing in all your shots esp this 'One'.
Thanks for sharing this amusing shot ( the hard worked behind it )

Dear Beverley,
As I noticed you like to use natural frames provided by the site. In this case the ruins of the wall are in favour of the composition too: it points my sight towards the distant tower.
I wish you a nice Sunday!

Hi Bev
Sounds like a challenging photo to take but it was well-worth the effort! Not only the low viewpoint made the tower look even more magnificent but the frame you created with the stone arch is such a great idea too!
It's kind of amazing to read in your note about what happened there in the 13th century. Certainly puts our own times in perspective.
Have a lovely Sunday! :-)
Kasia
PS. Of course I don't mind your constructive comments about my WS Afghan boy portrait! I can see that it would look really good as a bust portrait. I might actually follow your advice and post that version on Instagram today, to see what it would look like as a square frame.
Until you said that, I think I underestimated that shot's potential. It might have ended up as the main upload if I'd seen it that way earlier! Thanks. :-)
