Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
This is Giggleswick Public School. That may be very confusing to people outside the U.K., for a Public School in England and Wales is a fee-charging endowed school originally for older boys that was "public" in the sense of being open to pupils irrespective of locality, denomination or paternal trade or profession. But, it is definitely fee paying and usually quite expensive!
There has been a school in Giggleswick since 1499 when it was founded on half an acre of land leased by the Prior and Convent of Durham, to James Carr, the priest at the parish Church of St Alkelda, to enclose and build, at his own expense.
It has been enlarged and moved over the years and the building you see here, was built in 1867, when it moved out of the village centre up the hill to this location.
There will be a slightly different photograph of the building and some statues as workshops.
Thank you for your continued interest, Bev :-)

Hi Bev,
The gate and the trees are framing well the school. The point of view is showing the details of the school. The light is giving good colors output. Have a nice day.

I wish my school would look like this building...
Hi Beverely,
A wonderful picture of the main building through the iron-bars gate. All we see here tells us about its richness of architecture's design from old era, keeping a tradition of "Public school" as you mentioned in your note.
Excellent photojob, cheers.
Good afternoon,

Hello Bev,
I know what a British Public School is, but are they all automatically also Boarding Schools? If that is the case, perhaps the taller statue boy looks so confident because he keeps the younger boy (who may be dreaming of his home) as his "slave", forcing him to polish his shoes, make his bed, run various errands etc. Or have these fine boarding school traditions faded away by now?
The building looks quite fine and the photo is well composed, as far as the conditions allowed. But it looks remarkably much sharper in the larger version.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Bev,
When I see this picture almost the same school where my father to going to school (my father was born 1903) also with the same high fence.
My father was at school during the Spanish pandemic of 1918-1919, also wearing masks
Nice detailed picture with high sharpness and clarity.
Composition and presentation are nice but also qualitative nice.
Very well done, TFS.
Best regards,
John

Hello Bev,
This school looks just like boarding schools in movies. It is something that I can never understand. Why do the parents send children to such schools? I can't imagine that I would like it for my sons. Children need their parents. And these English schools were so cruel. Look at this younger boy in the Workshop. I am sure he misses his home and his parents miss him. Incredible that the school exists for such a long time.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Bev
You are right about school names and terminology being notoriously confusing. They are often impossible to translate too. In Belgium the name 'free schools' refers to schools under the guidance of the (Roman-catholic) church. So the UK is not the only place with confusing school terminology.
The closed gate is a big element in the picture here and not without meaning. The building itself is what you'd expect from a tradional public school. Beautiful, but also a bit ominous and threatening. Or is that just me having seen too many movies?

Dear Beverley,
Is it possible that I remember this place from the series 'The Crown'? Maybe my memories are mistaking me, but did Prince Charles attended this place? Thank you very much in advance for your answer!
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Beverley,
As long as it are not only expensive schools that provide good education, there is no problem, I think.
But there are many countries in the world (I'm thinking of many third world countries) where only the wealthy can afford a good education.
All three photos are excellently taken but personally, I like the first photo in the WS the most because of its composition.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Bev
Public for those who can afford it. I have always found it to be a strange elitist term. Our public schools are just that - open to all regardless of income or status.
A good photo hinting at the money behind the school although we do have some very wealthy private schools that call themselves GPS (Greater Public Schools).
cheers

Hi Beverley
Lovely old stone buildings not bad condition for it's age! an interesting foreword and a rather nice image of the school full of charm and nostalgia. You have a great viewpoint, subtle clarity, detail and good colour rendition. Well done

Hi Bev,
I guess the catch 22 is that the lower socio economic classes would not be able to afford to send their children there. Australia used to be more egalitarian than the UK with less class distinctions, but that is slowly changing over time. Good sharpness, shadow detail and tight framing. Tfs!

Hi Bev,
I never knew that. Something new for me to learn. I wonder whether my friend''s daughter goes there. I think she is in a boarding school so it could be it.
Lovely gate and nice stylish buildings behind.
Very attractive reportage,

Hi Bev.
Before reading your interesting note, I thought that this could be a palatial house of someone important, because I did not identify this beautiful and elegant construction with a school, logically it has to be expensive, just seeing how well everything is cared for and its nice situation.
I like in the WS the sculpture of the teacher and the student, in the most distant view we appreciate the environment well.
A beautiful composition, with great colors, splendid light and the sharpness is excellent with fine details.
Very well done, I like it
All the best for you.
Luis.
P.S. About what you were telling me about my last photo, I don't remember if the bus stopped or went through the glass, sometimes we would stop just to take the photo and other times I would stick the lens of the camera to the window glass and take them, but most were to throw away, but some were saved.

Hello Beverly,
Yes the term "public school" for a private school is confusing. The buildings look majestic and the gate is classy.
