Photographer's Note

This photo was taken about 6pm, rush hour, but not a normal day for these streets. Today, the traffic was limited to Formula One race cars testing London's busiest streets for a proposed Grand Prix circuit. If all is well, they'll do a full race about 2006.

The original motivation for this image was for the scavenger hunt: Summer '04 Rush Hour. While burning rubber is not something normally associated with "rush" hour, traffic all around the city center was in complete chaos for the whole evening, but the pubs and restaurants thrived. Of course the central buses were not in service and even some of the underground (subway) stations had to close for fear of over crowding the underground tube. Noisy television choppers cruised overhead.

I love the people in this photo. The safety/security person (in the orange jacket) is holding her ears as these cars damage hearing when so close, but the crowd is going bonkers, climbing everything to get a better view, cheering the cars on and taking pictures. I wish I could show you the full resoltion shot to show you the expressions of excitement!

I had to hold the camera over my head to get this shot (most of my images came out with half cars or the heads of the people in front of me).
