Photographer's Note

Happy New Year everyone!

Many famous London landmarks were lit up with images during December (with donations going to UNICEF) - culminating today (New Years Eve) when all participating venues were lit at once.

As you can see this is Buckingham Palace being lit with amongst other things our national flag the Union Jack. The first Union Jack was unveiled on 1st January 1801 and was based on the national flags of Scotland England and Ireland - the English component was first flown around 1270.

Buckingham Palace has been the official residence of the British Monarchy since 1837, and was originally a town house owned by the Dukes of Buckingham.
