Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
This scene shows the Assize Courts, inside the walls of Lincoln Castle.
Court hearings have taken place within the grounds of Lincoln Castle since the castle was built in the 11th century. A medieval shirehall on the site was demolished and replaced by a new county hall in 1776 but, after finding that the 18th century county hall was subsiding due to a mixture of local quarrying and poor construction, the justices ordered its demolition using prison labour and the commissioning of a new facility on the same site.
This current building, which was designed by Sir Robert Smirke in the Gothic style and built at a cost of £40,000, was completed in 1823. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with thirteen bays facing the east gate of the castle; the central section of three bays featured an arched doorway with a triple Gothic window on the first floor; the roof was crenellated and there were octagonal corner turrets.
Internally, the principal rooms in the building were the two courtrooms, one for hearing criminal cases and the other for hearing civil cases, both approximately square, decorated with wainscot panelling and located on the first floor. There was also a grand jury room containing an ornate fireplace guarded by lions bearing shields.
Although not as old as the castle, because of its location it has a great sense of age and importance.
If you are inspired to read this, you may find it interesting - The Romans were the first to make the top of Lincoln's hill home but it is the Norman castle, built on order of William the Conqueror and dating back to the 11th century, that can still be seen today. As part of the 'Lincoln Castle Revealed' project, Saxon remains have now been found in between the Roman townhouses and Norman castle adding another layer of history to the area. A complete Saxon stone coffin was found during the excavations containing a skeleton wearing leather boots, another symbol of the person's importance.
Hope this hasn't bored you!
Well done, if you have managed to read all this, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
Although not "real" Gothic it's a very attractive building. As usual you composed the photo well with the tree balancing the view of the octagonal turrets. The grey road leads up to the building between the bright and tidy green lawns.
I read the whole note and wasn't bored! ;-)
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley, a very interesting note, not boring at all!
It is a fine piece of architecture regardless of its age, it has some lovely features.
The plants that bedeck its walls add extra colour and texture.
The shot looks even better in the large version.
You had a sunny day which has enhanced the colours beautifully.
Kind regards, Jean.

Good evening Beverley,
A neat green lawn in front of the elegant building of the castle, with the climbing-plant cover the facade.
the carsgave good scale to the whole and a distant POV with the big tree added depth to the whole.
My best regards,

Hi Bev,
The length of the lawn is creating depth. The point of view is showing the details of this section of the lincoln castle. The quality of the light beautifies the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Bev
This is not quite as old a building as I was expecting. The style looks interesting with the photo being a good balance between the tree and building.
cheers

Hello Bev,
Hmmm....I thought 'Elvis has left the building ( castle )'
So the 'man in black' got caught again because he came back for his lawn mover....:-)
I would never expect to see such a delightful and sweet little court inside the walls of Lincoln castle. The turrets with the walls overgrown with plants ( neatly ) and the arched 'Gothic' windows with a solid cute looking doorway. A Roman with a English touch, kind of scene.
I wonder what happened to the 'leather boots' ..... see I read till the end :-)
Thanks for sharing this 'gripping' note.....

Hi Bev,
this looks familiar! I must check my photos from Lincoln, although now I doubt I will find something you didn't cover. May be at least I had a different light :)
The town is certainly underrepresented on TE, and it was one of my favourite destinations I had a chance to see in this country.
Very picturesque scene here, nice angle selected with the many shades of green.

Hi Bev.
A wonderful composition, the City Hall is a beautiful and elegant building, with those porticoes on the ground floor, beautiful Gothic-style windows on the first floor and the original towers along with the vines give it a romantic touch.
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly realized factors, in this precious image.
Well done. I like it a lot.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Bev,
Interesting history to this elegant place. In continuous use since the 11th century, but the current building is young by comparison. I like your POV.
Regards,
MT
