God begot, a photo from Hampshire, England

Taken during my visit to Winchester in 1982. I think this is called Tudor style architecture. I can't remember what kind of shop this one was, but the name is curious: "God begot". (In ancient English means "generated by God)- If a British subject will read this note, please give us a light on this expression.

THE MANOR OF GOD BEGOT

In 1002, Emma, daughter of Richard, Duke of Normandy, married Ethelred the Unready. As a wedding present the Duke gave her Winchester and Exeter. Ten years later he gave her the the Manor of Goudbeyete, Godbiete, or as it is now known, God Begot. Thus it is clear that, although in the City, the Manor was not part of the City. The Manor made its own laws and exacted its own taxes without reference to the Mayor of Winchester, or even the King himself.
The present building dates from 1050.

Hello Ingenua,

Winchester is a city full of historical buildings and you found a very attractive one, here.
It is a fine timber-framed building.
I cannot expand on your translation, which seems fine. Not only is the building old but the owners have chosen a very old font style to be 'in keeping' with the building but seems to further complicate the message!
I like the angled aspect, giving a strong f/g triangle, with figures that scale and add a sense of movemnt from right to left.

nice the view of the old architecture with the strange name.The passing by of the women in almost red make the image more attractive adding colour in the scene.

The quality of the scan is so excellent that it could be a very recent picture . But may be the clothes are a little updated .

indeed these are called Tudor Houses. In fact I moved to UK about 6 years ago and I have 5 year old daughter who recently at school had a project - homework: to prepare a model of a Tudor house, this was of course a homework for parents not for children...
Anyway this answers your question about where I live now.
I have been in Italy previously but I always loved your country.
Except for California this would be my favourite place to live. My best friend at work is Italian now, there are three people from Italy working with me...
I haven't had a chance to visit Sardegna yet though :) but I am sure I will be there in few years time, probably not this year though.

Lovely reportage from the UK, so very typical architecture for England.
Great quality, I wouldn't guess it is a scan.

Eccellente scansione, immagine molto viva grazie ai passanti vestiti in tinte sgargianti, ma anche estremamente naturale. Si porta bene i suoi 45 anni. L'emulsione ha immortalato tanti dettagli delle superfici e dei passaggi tonali, l'esposizione era sicuramente precisa già all'origine.
