Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
This is the Old Mill at Lower Slaughter. (Craig, you can rename your house Lower Slaughter so that you can say you live there.)
As you can imagine, I took a few shots here and was unsure about which photograph of this old building to post. Anyway, I will show the others as workshops, here and here . I'm sure there will be different opinions but, that's the beauty of art!
History of the Mill:
A Mill is recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086 on the site of the The Old Mill.
In the 14th Century it had begun to be known as Slaughter Mill and by the 18th Century had become independent of the manorial estate.
In its later years The Old Mill, situated on the River Eye came into the ownership of the Wilkins family. From the First World War up to 1958, the last year of flour production, the business at the Old Mill, Joseph T. Wilkins & Sons, was run by grandson Joseph Morris Wilkins, Joseph Wilkins was the last of four generations to mill at Lower Slaughter, as he had two daughters, Pauline and Susan but no sons, so regrettably no-one in the family was able to continue the business.
In 1959 part of the Mill House was turned into a local Post Office and Shop. The bakery section grew steadily and in 1992 they moved to larger premises at Manor Farm in Upper Slaughter, and sadly the mill went out of business.
The Old Mill re-opened its doors to the public for the first time on National Mill Days, Sunday 14th May 1995.
It is now a thriving craft shop and tea rooms.
I love how we can see both the water wheel and the tall mill chimney, both instrumental in powering the mill.
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

Hi Bev
A lovely reflection of the water wheel with good sharpness, colour and saturation. The tall chimney with its red brick colours contrasts well with the blue sky. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Beverley,
A wonderful take upon the old mill. I do not think its wheel is spinning anymore as rust and moth accumulate on its top shelves.
Details are immaculate as always. How nice is to discover old places like this one.
Wish you a nice weekend,
ike

Hello Beverley
A charming picture of the old mill with such a lot of history behind it. Excellent framing in a well cropped composition with these pleasing reflections and the subtle shades on the stonework. The WS picture is equally interesting with a broader view but the main post has more visual appeal in my opinion.
Cheers!

Hello Bev,
A very nice industrial memorial looking in good shape. The photo is well balanced and taken with superb colours and light. Now I am only waiting for photos from Upper Slaughter. Surely there is such a place? As for the WS: I know who Len is, but who is Chris? ;-)
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
What a lovely shot in very appealing sunlight of this old mill, whose stone walls look great with wonderful textures. I really like the play of light and shadows too as well as the reflections in the calm water.

Hello Beverley, the picture gives a glimpse to that old mill. The water wheel movement creates energy to make the mill working. The smoke was evacuated by the tall brick chimney. The river water was essential to the mill operation. Nowadays, the site is highlighted, the public is welcome here since 1995. Good vertical framing.

Hello, Bev.
Beautiful image of this old mill, with its large wheel and what most strikes us is its towering fireplace, a place with much charm, in a beautiful day, which undoubtedly attracted to discover unexpected corners.

Hi Bev,
It is a charming old water mill. Amazing to read about it's history spanning so many centuries. Very nice light, one wall in shadow adds contrast. I'm a bit surprised that the tree on the left is almost bare in mid May.

Hello Beverley,
Three fantastic pictures of the old wind mill. They deserve all three to be the main post.
I didn't know that such a long chimney was important/necessary for the functioning of the mill.
Beautiful clear and colourful presentations.
Good compositions and perfect sharpness.
Best regards, Paul

Classic shot, well taken on a sunny day. I assume there must be a great ol'English legend connected to the name of this place? Thanks for sharing & all the best.
Cheers
Benny
PS: I just read your note on your first shot from this location. I must say I'm a bit disappointed by the etymology.

Hi Bev
Yes, I now live in Lower Slaughter :)
this place has changed hands so often, its had quite the history...but then again, as old as it is its expected. A fine place for a TE meeting :) The lighting was harsh, but the end result is still very attractive. A subject like this doesn't need much help, it sells itself. love it. cheers

Ciao Bev
tre belle foto, come sempre, personalmente amo molto quella con il riflesso, mi piacciono molto...
Ma devo dire che c'è solo l'imbarazzo della scelta.
Un luogo bello e ben conservato, sicuramente da visitare.
Saluti

Hi Bev,
beautiful presentation of this old mill.
The weather was splendid and it helped to show the structure in vivid eye catching colors.
The red chimney reaches so proudly into the blue sky.
Excellent reportage,
