Battle Abbey II

After my previous photo of the gatehouse of Battle Abbey, here's a picture of the real thing. Battle Abbey was ordered by Pope Alexander II, because of the many people who were killed in the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. King William I started building it and the church was finished in 1094 (after William's death) and dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. Some centuries later it was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538 under King Henry VIII.
