Photographer's Note

This stone found at Melbourne Hall dates from Victorian times and could be operated by hand or with a drive belt controlled by the foot.
The larger stones were often driven by water and the user would lie on the plank above the grindstone while grinding metal items, giving rise to the phrase nose to the grindstone.
