The second picture in this series looks at the church as the visitor sees it on approaching, a fine example of a lych gate is passed through to enter the church grounds.
Extremely attractive to look at, a lych gate had what some might say was rather ghoulish function.
The word lych comes from Middle English, meaning a body, and a lych gate is a covered over gateway where the bier (coffin and stand) would be placed whilst the burial service was read.

I like the photo Mike, and also the history of the word lych, which I didn't know.
