Photographer's Note

This photo was taken in Saint Vladimir's Cathedral, which is the largest active church in Kiev. The cathedral is busy almost all the time. Since the fall of communism there has been a major resurgence in religion in the former Soviet Union. It is estimated that up to 70% of the churches were destroyed during Soviet times, but in the last 15 years there have been a lot of new churches built or old churches renovated. Saint Vladimir's is one of the lucky ones that survived the Soviet era intact, and it has some of the most beautiful interior decoration of any church I saw in Russia or Ukraine.

When I entered the cathedral, the photographer in me immediately said "Great light!" and I just had to take some photos, which is allowed (for a small fee).
