Photographer's Note

On that day’s morning I started riding my bike near Slovyansk in the northern part of Donetska Oblast and, having over-passed around 140 km, via Horlivka and Debaltseve, I came to Snizhne’s territory at the south-east corner of this oblast at the end of the day. As many of Donbas’s cities, Snizhne consisted of a number of urban-type settlements. The first of them on my way was Andriyivka (in the picture), which looks more like a rural settlement, but is considered as an urban one because most of its population work in coal-mining industry.

The church in the picture is dedicated to the Pokrov. It is around 200 years old.

The title of this shot is the same as that of the most famous painting among those painted by Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi, a well-known Russian landscape painter (by the way, he was born in Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast), which he titled as “Evening in the Ukraine”. I hope that my shot has some vague resemblance to this great Kuindzhi’s masterpiece.
