Photographer's Note

After another good day of ice climbing in the Swiss Alps, we returned to Kandersteg for a bite to eat and a warming mug of hot chocolate.

The hotshot climbers that were staying in the room next to ours were already there occupying one table. These guys are quite well known in Britain and have put up many hard new climbs all over the world. We felt heartened that they had difficulty getting up early too, as they left to go out earlier that morning well after we had and here they were already back. And we thought we were being lazy!

Late afternoon alpine light has a particular quality about it, it lights up the rock with a golden colour almost like it is glowing, this set against the ice and snow and the azure blue skies is a beautiful spectacle. I could see this scene out of the window of the cafeteria as I drank my hot chocolate and I, of course, couldn't resist getting my camera out to take a picture or two of the majestic peaks that surround the Kandersteg valley.

I am sure all you photo-addicts will know what I mean. If you see a shot you just have to get it and you can't concentrate on anything else until you do!

From this place in Kandersteg you can see the train that ferries cars and passengers through a very long tunnel that emerges on the other side of this section of the Alps.
