Photographer's Note

Around the beginning of January a friend and I went to the Swiss alps to do some ice climbing and visit the Kandersteg ice climbing festival.

Kandersteg is a small Swiss town set in a valley surrounded by 3000m plus peaks which form part of the Bernese Oberland range of the European Alps. Only a few miles away is Interlaken and Grindelwald which is at the foot of the notorious North face of the Eiger.

While my friend was competing in the Ice Climbing World Cup I had the opportunity to take some photos as I did not have a partner to climb with. I set up my tripod to take a shot of this beautiful valley. Just as I had everything ready to go this paraglider swooped in to the corner of the frame and I hastily pressed the remote shutter release. Talk about right place right time! He then circled round and landed in the car park right next to me on the right.

When preparing photos for TE I noticed that when changing a picture from Tiff format which is 16 bit to an 8 bit Jpeg some of the colour and vibrancy is lost. To get around this I add a hue/saturation layer in PhotoShop and then boost the saturation by 15 to 20. This makes the Tiff image look artificial but the resultant 200k jpeg retains the original colour of the unaltered tiff.
