Photographer's Note

The photo shows Elisabethenkirche (Elisabeth Church) interior, view from main entrance.

The Elisabethenkirche is located in the center of Swiss city of Basel, close to the Basel Theater. The neo Gothic church building is 72 m high and it is longer than the famous Basel Minster Cathedral.

The church was built between 1857 and 1864 by the wealthy Basel Merian business family. It was the first church built in Basel after the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland.

Today the church is home of the first Swiss "Open Church" which caters to the spiritual, cultural and social needs of urban people of all backgrounds: Businesspeople, shoppers, tourists, asylum seekers, working poor, minorities, homeless etc.

This church is very well known throughout the city and the whole county for the service in honor of the Basel Carnival which is considered as very serious event, than the service with blessing of the human-animal relation, and also weekly and trimesterly healing-/blessing services for people in need and sorrow.

Nearly 50'000 people visit the church each year, for all the above reasons.
