Photographer's Note

To follow the so interesting pixeterror's reportage from Basel's carnival (Fasnacht) I would like to add a shot of its less spectacular, but very intime and popular side.

Schariwaari comes as the last part of Fasnacht, after the 5 o'clock in the evening of the last day and it follows until the definitive end of the festivity, at 4 o'clock next morning.

During this time the members of cliques and also those who have not participate in a clique, go around with their own dresses, often in couples or alone, just playing thier piccolos and drums for their pleasure. There is of course also a massive dress-mixed parade in the main streets, but the very beautiful and special of schariwaari are those lonely players in the small streets of the old town. One of them, once asked at 3 in the morning by a disgusted and tired neighbour why he has been playing alone in the small square by his house, just answered: "it has a beautiful echo here around. It sounds good"

The "Moorgestaich" opening of Fasnacht, is also a free-style parade, exactly as Schariwaari.
