Photographer's Note

Winter photo from St. Gotthard Pass taken by end of June!! Yes it was summer time in Switzerland but the St. Gotthard Pass was still covered by snow and the ambient temperature at lunch time did not climb above +3°C!!

St. Gotthard Pass (2,091 m a.s.l.) which connects the cantons of Uri and Ticino is located within the canton Ticino, about 2 km south of the border with canton Uri, between the mountain massifs of Pizzo Lucendro and Pizzo Centrale on the way from Goschennen (Uri) and Airolo (Ticino).

The pass lies on the most important route between Italy and Germany. It is the most direct link between Zurich and Lugano. The nearest towns are Hospental (7 km north) near Andermatt and Airolo (4 km south).

The region of Andermatt lies at the foot of the Furka and Oberalp passes connecting the river Rhone and Rhine valleys thus making the Gotthard area a strategic place for transports and military.
