Photographer's Note

This is one of the frescos in the Church San Carlo in Negrentino
in Valle Blenio/Ticino. One has to realize, that the frescos here were created nearly 1000 years ago in a poor and tiny church high at the slopes of a southern alpine valley in a small village, which doesn't exist any more since centuries (please use "map view" at the left). How religious these people must have been ...

It's nearly a wonder that these paintings are still in this condition. The interior of this really small church with it's narrow windows is very dark and so sunshine hadn't the chance of bleaching these breathtaking colours during the centuries.
Please see also here and here.

San Carlo still is the most impressive church I've seen so far - but in a very special way. San Carlo touches the heart, the soul ...
In this building - I think - one is very much nearer to that what happened in Bethlehem than in each cathedral of this world ...

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all !
