Photographer's Note

Previously, the only other place I had ever seen European Bison was in photos of primitive cave art in Lascaux in France, and Altamira in Spain. So it was a pleasure to see a real one, after all these years, happily munching on some leaves in Skansen Park. I am not normally a fan of zoos but the one at Skansen is well run, has plenty of space, and very few bars. And best of all, the animals are in good condition and seem happy enough. They are smaller than the American bison but no less impressive. Here's a map of their previous range:

Sadly, they are now restricted to 2 tiny areas in eastern Poland and the Caucasus region of Georgia.
