Photographer's Note

This is a Common Raven (Corvus corax). The photo is taken south of Uppsala close to the Fyris river. This bird is found across the northern hemisphere and is one of the largest birds of the corvidae (crow) family. The weight of an adult raven is 1-1.4 kilogrammes, the length is 54-67 centimetres long and it has a wingspan of 115-130 centimetres. The raven has previously been quite rare in parts of Sweden, but since the 1970s the number of birds have risen and now the raven is nesting throughout Sweden.

The Raven is one of the most mythical birds. This probably depends on the raven's black shiny colour, its feeding on carrion, and that it has been considered highly intelligent. It has long been regarded as an ominous bird and associated with death. As scavengers the raven was known to eat people that have died in wars or executions. For this reason the bird became associated with the dead and with lost souls. In Sweden ravens in the past were known as "nattramnar" ghosts of murdered people or people that had committed suicide and did not receive a Christian burial.

Well-known ravens to many Swedes are Huginn and Muninn, a pair of ravens in Norse mythology that belonged to the god Odin. The birds flew over the world inhabited by humans, Midgård, as well as Asgård, the home of the gods. Huginn and Muginn saw everything and reported it to Odin.

In many cultures throughout the world the raven has been revered as a spiritual being or god.
